Err, rather midnight in America. But midnight is when I logged my first Russian contact! And it’s my farthest contact by far at nearly 5,900 miles.
I decided to troll 20 meters one last time before turning in for the night. I’d overheard a lot of interesting QSOs, but hadn’t made any since my quick shot down to Brazil.
I was turning the VFO when I heard someone calling CQ DX “beaming North America.” The prefix was Russian. I had no problems chatting with Valery, RN6HCW, from his QTH between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. Wow! Gotta love those high-power stations, and the friendly operators who run them and call CQ endlessly waiting for someone to respond.
